Small Change Press launch new collection by Nathan Shepherdson:
Small
Change Press - www.smallchangepress.com.au
QLD'S independent publisher of poetry, spoken word and lyric
chapbooks - would like to invite you all to the upcoming launch
of their third title for 2008 what marian drew never told me about
light by Nathan Shepherdson.
In
recent times, Nathan Shepherdson has become one of Australia’s
most awarded and exciting contemporary poets. He has won the
prestigious Josephine Ulrick Poetry Prize twice (2004, 2006), the
2005 Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Award for an unpublished
manuscript, the 2006 Newcastle Poetry Prize and the 2006 Arts
Queensland Val Vallis Award. His first book Sweeping the Light
Back Into the Mirror was published in 2006 by UQP. He lives in
the township of Glass House Mountains in Queensland.
Nathan’s
second collection continues to raise the bar for poetry in Australia.
what marian drew never told me about light is a deeply
perceptive exploration of light and the imagery of renowned
photographer Marian Drew. This long poem is a truly
contemporary work, brimming with trademark experimentation and
symbolism. With this release he leads us toward the light, but it is
not at the end of a tunnel.
As
part of this unique arts experience, Nathan will be
conducting his first public performance of the entire poem inspired
by Marian’s work as well as having a slideshow of some of her
photos on display. The night will also see a number of special guests
join him on stage including the widely published up and coming
writer/poet Anna Krien – www.annakrien.com
- who won the Australian Press Council Award when she was eighteen;
and beach house duo “fractions” featuring reborn
casiotone revisionist

Footnote: David
likes poetry. David likes poems. David likes poets. He is in no
way any longer associated to the debauched performance beast that
calls itself Ghostboy.
This new
collection features some live "favourites" on the
printed page for the first time alongside new pieces
written in the past 12 mths including the sequenced title
piece which is David's manifesto for life, love, and the circus ring
we all walk into every day before sleep. This limited
edition book has an amazing cover featuring original art
from one of Australia 's finest street artists, Justin Leegwater, who
will be exhibiting some of his street art panels & photography
inspired by the spoken word scene on the night.
And if that's not enough...the
first 5 people to buy a ticket also receiving a free steak
knife!
As
part of the And the Ringmaster
Said...... launch experience, David
will be reading from his new book joined by a number of
"special guests" to help him birth this work live. MC
for the night will be Graham Nunn and the
following wonderful and joyous talents will bring
both the necessary beauty and brevity to the night:
Matt
Hetherington - Melbourne 's disputed King of Haiku and
sensory love poems - will return to his true home following his
great performances at QPF last year to deliver another set of
Zen surrealistic romantic domestic observations. Truly one of
Australia 's finest living poet's, flying up for his only QLD reading
this year. www.myspace.com/mattheth
Skye
Staniford - Brisbane's hauntingly tender &
mega-talented singer/songwriter who fronts Golden
Virtues as well as playing with Tim Steward and
occasionally Ghostboy - stepping up to the mic for the 1st time
naked & alone to present her debut solo set. The Skye. A guitar.
That voice. Those words. Not to be missed.

Small
Change Press-
Queensland's newest independent publisher of spoken word, lyrics and
poetry is heading down south to launch it's little old sunburnt
self into the post winter hearts & minds of Melbourne's
poets and poetry f(r)iends .
Small
Change
was created this year by poets Graham Nunn & David Stavanger in
response to the limited publishing opportunities of QLD's emerging
poets & spoken word artists to get their work out in print form.
The press has no funding at this stage instead being fuelled
by our combined love of contemporary poetry, our desire to support
new and sometimes forgotten writers in SE QLD, a love of all forms of
poetry including the new spoken word movement and rock"n"roll
poets like Bob Dylan / David Bowie / Steve Kilbey / Tom Waits
and building on Brisbane's relationship with the Melbourne poetry
scene by publishing one Melbourne poet each year who has come either
been an invited guest of the Queensland Poetry Festival or who has in
some way contributed to the sun loving poetry community up
north.
Following
on from great support in our home town we are coming down south with
all of our 2007 poet's hidden in excess baggage and would love you
all to come along and help us celebrate our 1st year and first
time as a small press in Australia's big smoke of poetry. Our
Melbourne launch will see readings from all our 2007
poets including Brisbane's disputed king of rock"roll
poetry and one of QLD's finest poets Graham
Nunn reading from Ruined
Man - his
own take on Dylan's Blood
on the Tracks ;
one of our most exciting new voices Julie
Beveridge
performing pieces from her unique take on haibun & domestic
terror Home
is Where the Heartache Is ;
one of the genuine legends of independent poetry publishing and
possibly the nicest man in QLD Rob
Morris
sharing his reflective tales of Brisbane and meteorological
desires in So
Much Weather;
and Melbourne's own occasional poet /musician / soccer fan
/ sleeping fanatic Matt
Hetherington whose
new book I
Think We Have
establishes him firmly as one of this country's most tender,
humane and accessible writers. MC for the night will be
David Stavanger of Small Change Press who promises not to read
your minds on the night.
And if
that's not enough the night will also see feature sets by some of our
Small Change press friends including Melbourne's answer to Laurie
Anderson and all round experimental electronic lady Klare
Lanson and
of
the greatest living Irish singer-songwriters Andy
White
who has worked with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Sinead O'Connor
and who will hit the 303 stage with nothing but a big fender amp and
a small book of words...not to be missed!
And
if that's still
not enough for you, everyone who comes along on the night will also
receive a copy of one of our four 2007 titles signed by our poets via
our "Small Change" lucky dip and we will be announcing our
2008 titles!!
All
titles will also be available to buy on the night as well for $10.
